Lecture by Mariam Sonntag (United Kingdom) "Sir Arthur Gilbert’s Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London"
The collection of decorative art by Rosalinda and Arthur Gilbert includes objects made of silver and gold, decorated snuffboxes, watches, portrait miniature, as well as stone-cutting works and samples of micromosaics. Items in the collection were purchased from the 1960s, many of which come from the most prestigious collections. Spouses Gilbert especially interested in the origin of the work and their relationship with prominent historical figures. The collection, originally exhibited in the Los Angeles Art Museum, was transferred to Great Britain in 1996, where it was located for a while at Somerset House, from which in 2008 it entered the permanent storage in the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2016 gallery, where this collection is exhibited, opened after a major renovation. Temporary movement of objects in the repository allowed to study them in detail.
The lecture will acquaint you with the items from the collection, as well as with studies about preservation of works that are made from ornamental stones and micromosaics. Special attention will be paid to the masterpieces of this collection and the historical significance of a number of works.

Currently, she is the Gilbert Project Conservator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, since 2015 she has been working as a restorer of sculpture. She has a masters degree in the specialties “Stone Restoration” and “Preservation of the Archaeological and Historical Cultural Heritage”. Worked as a curator in the Berlin State Museums, the Jerusalem Museum of Israel, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the Getty Villa in Los Angeles
